This Sunday (25th) the team are holding an event at Margetson Crescent, Parson Cross. There will be music, a fashion show to show off the custom made t-shirts, dancing, street art, a 'voice your opinion' tent and of course, cake!

Come down between 1-4pm on Sunday, if the weather isn't so great we'll be inside at a nearby venue, just follow the arrows!

In the run up to the event, we are holding so preparation evenings to get more young people involved:

Wednesday 21st - Meynell youth Centre 6.30 - 9pm

We'll be at meynells usual open access night holding a t-shirt customising workshop.

Thursday 22nd - Colley Youth Club 6.30 - 9pm

Girls night! Fashion workshop, to customise your t-shirt and any other item of clothing you want to model at the fashion show!

Saturday 24th - cake baking at Remington Youth Club, 11-1pm

To raise awareness of the local youth centres, the team have been organising t-shirt making workshops in local school, kicking off last Friday at Yewlands School. The first workshop was really popular, with around 50 young people taking part.

If you made a t-shirt on Friday, remember to come and collect it from one of the youth centres listed below. There will be workshops at the youth centres where you can customise your t-shirt more and take part in dance lessons! All the workshops are free (including the t-shirt!).

There will be another workshop at Chaucer School on Monday.

Our free cake day was a success! (mainly due to good weather) The general opinion on the streets from young and old, was that there is a lack of things to do for young people in Parson Cross. It further highlighted the problem of a minority of young people hanging around the streets, particulary Margetson Crescent and how people feel intimidated by their presence, contributing to the negative image many young people have.

Many people were aware of youth centres in the area, but didn't know if they were still open or of the type of activities available to young people.

This Sunday, the live project team will be taking to the streets of Parson Cross armed with some yummy cakes to talk to local people about what they think about the things that are available for young people in the area.

Live Projects

Live projects are a leading educational initiative at the University of Sheffield School of Architecture. Architecture students work in groups on a 6 week Live Project with a range of clients including local community groups, charities, health organisations and regional authorities. In some cases the projects involve actual building, in others design of urban master plans, in others consultation exercises. In every case, the project is real, happening in real time with real people.

Project Brief

The project is primarily led by 4 main groups working in Parsons Cross; two bodies whose work is focused on regeneration - Sheffield City Council and S.O.A.R as well as Chilypep and Sheffield Futures who work directly with the community. As a group they have been working to secure funding in order to develop a purpose built young people's building that will,amongst other things, help raise aspirations and provide a positive resource for young people in the area.

The intention is for the building to be used by young people mainly aged between 13 -19 which includes provision for social, leisure and support work.

The Live Project aims to assess the need for a physical building and hopes to bring new vision and ideas to the project. In the short term we would like to establish trust and hand over an initiative to the young people, by raising awareness of existing facilities and promoting the idea of ownership. We hope this will initiate future intervention to involve the wider community which may look towards a new building, or alternatively utilise the current youth centres to their full potential.
